Every so often I’m asked to provide a portrait photography session for a large family with the aim of giving a special someone a lovely gift on their birthday. Family photographs make great presents that you know will be cherished by the recipient, and what better gift to give a grandmother or father than lots of lovely photographs of their family.
On this occasion I was to photograph 10 grandchildren aged from 2-18. I’m quite used to photographing larger family groups so quite enjoy the challenge of trying to wrangle both more formal photographs and candid photographs from a session even with a lot of people. The weather was a little less than ideal, but we decided to forge ahead as the special birthday was looming near and the weather forecast wasn’t showing a significant improvement in the very near future.
We headed to Winterton beach as it’s a family favourite, and the bonus of the beach environment is that it looks good year round, has well drained sand and provides you with a beautiful colour palette to work with in addition to beautifully weathered coastal features to utilise.
The main aim was to obtain photographs of all the grandchildren but well the adults who came along couldn’t resist the chance to get some photographs with their children so we photographed everyone. I hope you like some of the photographs from the session.
